My problem with the visuals lies with the world around them. The Transformer models are well represented, and they pay proper respect to their movie versions, smoothly animating from vehicle to robot form and back in a split-second.
Graphically, Revenge of the Fallen won't impress you as much as the state-of-the-art CGI in the film. With enough practice, you'll be constantly shifting back and forth as you navigate a map to get around faster, much like how an experienced Quake player rocket jumps to get around more efficiently than his opponents. Transforming back and forth from vehicle to robot mode is done by holding down a shoulder button, and this allows you to pull off moves like super jumps and special melee attacks. Primary and secondary weapons, vehicle modes and vehicle weapons, a unique special attack and a godmode-like Overdrive ability make for characters that can wreak incredible havoc. You've got explosions, lots of cool characters to choose from, and plenty of robot-on-robot action.Ĭontrolling these digital Transformers is entertaining, thanks to the many different tools of destruction at your disposal. While it doesn't compare favorably to the greatest modern games, this is the sort of experience that kids in the 80s would have died for as they played with their plastic action figures. It's a game that impressed me because of its focus on engaging multiplayer battles between teams of Autobots and Decepticons. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen seeks to change all that. While these games may perform well on opening weekend, their long-term viability is limited, as their overall quality and production values relegate the average tie-in to retirement in the discount bargain bin.
If these movie games aren't on shelves by the time that their respective film is in theaters, then the men in suits can't capitalize on the marketing blitz that makes them a smart investment. Development teams are pushed by their publishers to rush the games out on time in an attempt to cash in on the buzz accompanying summer blockbusters. Movie tie-ins have traditionally been a disgraceful subset of the videogame industry.
